Firearm Forum Question: What is a Reasonable Price for an Extra Ruger Cylinder

Ask A Firearms Question:
Can you give me some guidance on how much I should pay for an Extra Ruger Revolver Cylinder?
Thank you Karl Zicon.

Answer :
Blog Administrator -
Always remember, the market drives the price, i.e. Economics 101, Law of Supply and Demand.

Saying that, Ruger Cowboy Single Action Revolver Cylinders are in two general categories, the original 3-Screw Version plus that next generation, and the current models which are mainly manufactured by third parties like Davidson and Lipsey.

If you can find an extra or replacement cylinder the Ruger Cowboy 22LR and 22 Magnum are the most commonly available and run about $125.00 on eBay. The 357 Magnum and 44 Magnum are going between $95.00 and $125.00. The 45 Long Colt (LC) is around $75.00. The 45 acp goes for around $125.00. The 41 Magnum and 44-40, which are rare can be upwards of $175.00. The later version 9mm and 30 Caliber are $125.00 to $200.00.
Special Note: Lately the 357 Magnum has been popular because these can be bored out to accept a 9mm and 44-40. See pictures of some Ruger cylinders below:

Bearcat and Bisley Ruger Cylinders often are engraved -

If you are shopping for an extra or replacement cylinder, be patient, and check eBay frequently to find what you want.

The double Action Ruger Cylinders (all calibers) are around $125.00, make sure these are complete with the ejector rod.
Parts of a Double Action Revolver -

The prices above do not include the old Ruger Black Powder Revolvers, or conversion cylinders which can still be purchased new for around $230.00.
Ruger 45 Long Colt Black Powder Cylinder -
Commentary -
The older Ruger cylinders are getting harder to find and more expensive. Double Action Revolver Cylinders are NOT interchangeable with Cowboy style Single Action Handgun Cylinders.

Disclaimer -
The prices above are a guideline based on current market at time of the post.

==> My recommendation is -
Make damn sure the Ruger cylinder you purchase is for your Ruger Revolver.

Firearm Forum Question: What about Coating Bullets?

Ask A Firearms Question:
Saw the Post on Buffing Bullets.
What about Dipping (coating) a Bullet, can you elaborate on this?
Thank you Louie Louie Vinchenso.

Apply desired coating substance to the bullet portion only .....

Federal Nyclad Coated Ammo Bullets ...

45 ACP Teflon Coated Ammo Bullets ...

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
There are two very distinctive parts or definitions to coating a bullet.

Definition Part 1,
The so-called method of coating or dipping a bullet refers to simply rubbing on, or dipping the bullet portion of the cartridge into some type of substance.
Some people use a Cotton Q-tip as an applicator to apply the substance.

See the List below for some examples of what people have used over the last hundred years:

1) Rubbing the Bullet with a Poison (such as a pesticide, prior to ban DDT was the favored, now it's rat poison)
2) Rubbing the Bullet with Snake Venom (such as rattlesnake, cotton mouth, copperhead,
     cobra, etc.)
3) Rubbing the Bullet with Feces (human, pigeon, animal such as a cat or dog)
4) Rubbing the Bullet with Pigs Fat (this practice is to insult those of the Islamic faith)

The concept is simple.
If the bullet doesn't kill it's target the victim will die from poisoning.
The exception is the Pigs Fat, this is meant to offend Islam or Jewish religious people because eating Pork (pig) is taboo in their respective religions. I know people that coat their personal carry handguns with Pigs Fat. They started doing this after the U.S. 911 attacks.

Important: If you elect to do something like this, leave the bullet standing up to dry out for at least an hour before putting it in the gun.

Caution: This could backfire onto the user. If the poisonous substance were to rub off and get into the pours of your skin, a cut or abrasion, or into your eyes the effect could be devasting to the gun user. Also applying anything to a bullet could potentially damage the firearm.
Make sure you wear a latex or rubber hand glove, or use a cotton squab such as Q-tip.
Also the heat from a bullet may just burn the substance applied off.

Definition Part 2,
1) Federal Ammunition once offered Nyclad (nylon polymer) coated bullets. The concept was to reduce lead in the environment.
2) Another method is to apply a powder coating to the bullet, and heat it in something like a toaster oven.
Warning - this is for re-loaders only, the bullet is being coated prior to heating in an oven, a full cartridge would explode if heated.
3) Some manufactures use to make Teflon Coated Ammo but discontinued this when they realized Teflon Bullets could penetrate Body Armor. This ammo can still be found at Gun Shows or through private sellers.

Firearm Forum Question: What's the Difference Between a Recall and a Product Warning Notice?

Ask A Firearms Question:
I am confused, what's the difference between a RECALL and a Product Warning Notice?
Thank you Cindy Grims.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
A 'RECALL' is just that. The manufacturer has determined the item in question, firearm, ammo, or firearm accessory has been deemed totally unsafe to use and should be returned to the manufacturer for repair or replacement.

A 'PRODUCT WARNING NOTICE' is simply an advisement that there may be a problem or issue if the Firearm or item is used incorrectly.

Many Product Warning Notices eventually turn into a Recall if litigation so determines (lawyers suing on behalf of someone injured or who has died).

As I have stated many times, SAFETY First. Treat your weapon with respect. Clean it often, inspect it before use.

If you purchase a weapon or firearm accessory especially used, check to see if there is a Recall or Product Warning Notice out on that item or model.

If you are planning to purchase a NEW Firearm or Firearm Accessory check to see if there is Recall or Product Warning Notice on that item, if there is, avoid it altogether.

If you have any doubts about a Firearm get it checked out with a qualified Gunsmith in your area.
If you live in Phoenix Arizona, I may be able to help you with a recommendation for a gunsmith. Many specialize in certain weapons or accessories.

If you buy AMMO either from a private seller or a licensed dealer you should always check to see if that Ammo Lot Number is on a Recall list. AMMO on Recall should never ever be used. Also inspect you ammo, make sure it is not rusty or corroded, if it is don't use it.
=> Important: If you shoot often you will encounter on occasion a round that will not fire, there nothing to be worried about, inspect the rest of the ammo before using and properly dispose of any unfired rounds.

I hope this has answered your question and cleared up the difference between a Recall and a Product Warning Notice.

Firearm Forum Question: CVA In-Line Black Powder Rifle Recall Notice

Ask A Firearms Question:
I just bought my first Black Powder In-Line Rifle, it is a used CVA, now I was told it may be on a RECALL list. Also that CVA is no longer in business. What should I do?
Thank you Henry J. Thomas.

Here is an example of a CVA In-Line Black Powder Rifle that exploded in use.

Typical Looking CVA Model In-Line Black Powder Rifle ...

CVA Percussion Style Black Powder Rifle,
these are NOT on Recall ....

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes, some CVA In-Line Rifles are on a Nationwide Recall List. And, yes, CVA was purchased by Blackpowder Products, Inc.
CVA (Connecticut Valley Arms) is still handling the recall on these particular Black Powder Rifles, see notice from company below.
The CVA In-Line Rifles on the RECALL List have the following Serial Numbers (S/N): 61-13-XXXXXX-95 and 61-13-XXXXXX-96.
Check your serial number and if the Firearm is in this manufactured series you need to return it for repair or replacement.

IMPORTANT:
1) The Recall notice was issued by CVA August 1997.
2) Blackpowder Products purchased CVA May 1999.
