Firearm Forum Question: Review and Testing of the Henry Big Boy Mare's Leg Lever Action Pistol

Ask A Firearms Question:
No question today ...
This is my personal 'Review' of the Henry Repeating Arms Mare's Leg 45 LC (Long Colt) Lever Action Pistol.
This is essentially a cut down Big Boy Henry Lever Action Rifle.
This was made famous in the TV Show called 'Wanted Dead or Alive'
staring Steve McQueen:

Here are some photos of my Henry 45LC Mare's Leg with Holster:

My Cowboy Scabbard I use when riding my horse carrying the Henry Mare's Leg 45LC Lever Action.
Note: This Scabbard can be used as an attachment to your saddle while riding a horse or on your motorcycle ....

Answer / Review:
Blog Administrator -
I purchased a Henry Mare's Leg 45 Long Colt Lever Action with Authentic Mare's Leg Holster sometime back.
Essentially It's more of a collector's piece.
I just took it to the gun range and fired my 45LC Mare's Leg for the first time, see target below.
It holds five 45 long colt rounds in the tube plus one in the chamber.

Note: Since this is cut down version of a lever action rifle it is sold as a handgun (pistol).

Henry offers this in 45 Long Colt; 44 Magnum; 357 Magnum; and 22 Caliber.
This is 100 percent American Made.

Comments about the Henry Mare's Leg:
Favorable -
1/ The firearm handles well and is accurate, no issues.
2/ Cowboy Shooters will love this firearm so will Steve mcQueen buffs.

The Downsides to the the Henry Mare's Leg are -
1) Using Brass is a bad idea, it scratches easily and is hard to maintain. Blued or Stainless Steel would be better choices.
2) It is too heavy.
3) The Henry Holster is poorly designed. I had to have a leather shop rework it before I could even use it. There are better after market holsters available now that were not available when I bought my Henry.
4) It has the same draw back that all Lever Action Rifles have, hard to clean and maintain. See Youtube Video below on Disassembly and Reassembly of The Henry Mare's Leg 45LC Handgun.
5) The Henry Mare's Leg has no half cock safety position on the hammer.

=> My Test and Review Rates this Firearm as a - BUY for Cowboy Shooters and Collectors but NOT for novice or target shooters.
=> I Rate the Henry Mare's Leg Holster as a - NO BUY. Get an after market.

The Target below shows me Test Firing my Henry 45LC Lever Action Mare's Leg Pistol at the Indoor Gun Range using Ultramax 45 Long Colt Cowboy 250 Grain, Round Nose, Flat Point Ammo.
This was my First Test Firing with 6-rounds (Five in the Tube, One in Chamber).
Fired from the hip at 30-Feet using a Target Size of 24h x 17w Inches....

The Target below shows me Test Firing my Henry 45LC Lever Action Mare's Leg Pistol at the Outdoor Gun Range using Ultramax 45 Long Colt Cowboy 250 Grain, Round Nose, Flat Point Ammo.
This was my second Test Firing with 10-rounds (Five only in the Tube, reloading once).
Fired aiming the Mare's Leg at 75-Feet (25 yards) using a Target Size of 33h x 22w Inches....

Firearm Forum Question: How to Protect Your Rifle Barrel Using a Condom

Ask A Firearms Question:
Hello, I would like to suggest a new topic forum. How about the use of Condoms on Rifles and Shotguns?
Thank you Condom Facts

The DPMS Panther AR-15 Carbine:
Non Lubricated Condom Individual Packs, sold in various brands:
box of Non Lubricated Condoms:
Note: Individual Trojan brand Condom Packages inside the box are blue color.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes, CONDOMS are a great way to protect your rifle and shotgun barrel. The use of condoms to keep rain and dust out of rifles goes back to the Vietnam War when soldiers would cover their M16 Rifles with a condom to keep the monsoon rains out.
This practice is also great for hunters whereby they often encounter rain, sleet, and snow.
The condom protects the firearm, and when needed to be used, the bullet or pellets simply pass right through the thin non-lubricated latex material covering the barrel end.

Please see my Instructional Video showing how to properly cover the end of your barrel.
Note the video has no sound:

Instructions for Applying a CONDOM to a Rifle Barrel:
Step 1) Acquire a Non Lubricated Latex Condom (any brand).
Step 2) You will also need a small rubber band or twisty tie.
Step 3) Remove the condom from the wrapper.
Step 4) Securing the Rifle, gently slide the condom over the tip of the barrel until it is fully extended. Caution, do not pull the condom too tight at the end of the barrel you will tear it.
Step 5) Using either a small rubber band or a twisty tie secure the condom around the barrel so it does not come off.
Note: I use a rubber band to install the Condom, then apply a twisty tie closer to the bottom of the condom to keep it from moving, see the 2 photos below of my DPMS Panther AR-15 5.56 Carbine:

Firearm Forum Question: Guidelines for Game Hunting Rifles

Ask A Firearms Question:
Can you advise what guideline should be used in purchasing a Rifle for Hunting and for what type of game it would be used for?
Thank you The Trumpeter.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
I haven't done any hunting in years, but I have hunted about everything there is including Big Game in North America including Alaska, and Big Game in Africa.
Some Medium Size Game Calibers listed below can hunt some Big Game such as the 7MM and the 35 Remington.
I asked several people I know that still hunt a variety of game including small, medium, and big game animals. This is a general consensus of opinion and it is just that an opinion because hand loaded ammo can be configured differently than standard manufactured ammunition. There is no consideration for specially large bore ammo which can be found on the previous topic post - Body Armor.
Here is a compilation, use it wisely:

Identifying Rifle Calibers for Use:
Large Bore - Big Game Hunting ....
45-70; 45-90; 30-06; 300 Winchester Magnum; 8mm; 338 Lapua, 375 H&H Magnum; 454 Casull; 458 Winchester Magnum; 50 Caliber BMG.
Note - Excludes the custom and exotic calibers such as the 500 Nitro.
Primary Gun Manufacturers :
Remington
Marlin
Weatherby
Game and Animal Types :
Polar Bear; Grizzly; Alaskan Brown Bear; Moose; Caribou; Tiger; Lion; Elephant; Water Buffalo; Hippo; Rhino; Bison.

Big Bore - Medium Game Hunting ....
7MM; 44-40; 303; 308; 35 Remington; 44 Magnum; 45LC; 30-30; 30 Caliber Carbine; 300 AAC Blackout; 7.62; 223/5.56
Game and Animal Types :
Elk; Deer; Black Bear; Mountain Lion; Antelope; Mountain Sheep; Wild Hogs; Zebra; Horse; Giraffe; Kangaroo; Alligator; Coyote; Wolf.
Special Note: The Newer 300 AAC Blackout with subsonic ammunition and a suppressor (silencer) is a popular choice for hunting wild boar and coyotes at night.

Small Bore - Small Game Hunting and Fun ....
Rifle - 243; 270; 357 Magnum; 22 Magnum; 22 LR
Shotgun - 10 Gauge; 12 Gauge; 16 Gauge; 20 Gauge; 410 Gauge
Game and Animal Types :
Beaver; Possum; Muskrat; Wood Chuck; Squirrel; Rabbit; Raccoon; Turkey; Fox; Prairie Dog; Skunk; Feral Cats; Snakes.

Note: The more Popular and Effective Handguns to carry when hunting Medium or Big Game are:
41 Magnum; 44 Magnum; 45 Long Colt

Firearm Forum Question: Winchester Ammo Recall

Ask A Firearms Question:
I heard Winchester (Olin) Ammunition is being recalled in 22 Caliber Long Rifle (LR) is this true?
Thank you Bacon Lover.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes, this is true. see photo image above.
Winchester is recalling two production Lot numbers of 22 LR sold as M-22, 1,000 Round boxes (bricks) with two separate boxes of 500 each contained within the larger box.
The Lot Numbers being recalled are:
GD42L and GD52L
You have to open the larger box, remove one of the individual 500 round boxes, open the lid and look at the Lot Number to see if you have one on the recall list.
WARNING: Do NOT shoot this ammo or resell it.

Firearm Forum Question: What Should I Look for in a Complete Lower Assault Rifle Assembly

Ask A Firearms Question:
In a previous post a question was asked 'What's in a complete Upper AR15 Assembly", I would like to know What's in a complete 'Lower Assembly'?
Thank you Fuzzy Stash.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
When buying a Lower for any assault rifle regardless of the caliber, make sure it's complete and fully assembled. The Upper should be able to be installed on any standard mil spec complete lower receiver and be ready to fire.
A Complete Lower Assembly should include the following: Complete Lower Parts Kit, Pistol Grip, Buffer Tube, Buffer, Buffer Spring, 6-Position M4 Style Stock, and Accepts all Standard Mil Spec Uppers.

Notes:
1) You may want to look for a lower that can accommodate both right and left handed shooters if you plan to sell this firearm anytime in the near future.
2) The picture shows a lower assembly with 6-position adjustable stock. These also come with a fixed stock as on the original M-16 Style or a Folding Stock.
3) This post plus the previous post on December 11, 2013 showing the Upper gets one ready for a complete assault rifle, less the Magazines.
4) If you are purchasing an Assault Rifle in components as opposed to a complete rifle from an FFL dealer, you will have to buy a Magazine.

Firearm Forum Question: Field Dressing a Deer

Ask A Firearms Question:
Got my first deer this year, but had a lot of issues with field dressing the deer properly, is there a good video that explains How to Field Dress a Deer?
Thank you Carl Mudder.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
In searching Youtube I like the following instructional video the best.
Pay attention to the field dressing because the meat can become spoiled or contaminated if done improperly. The colder the weather the better for preserving the meat.
Personally I never tried to skin or carve the meat. I suggest before you go hunting find a butcher that will skin and butcher the meat including packaging for freezing. Also deer are quite heavy even after field dressing, so hunt with a buddy and be prepared to haul the carcass a fair distance to your vehicle. Always make sure you have 2 sharp knives, and wear surgical gloves. Remove any items on your wrist such as a watch or compass before starting the field dressing.

Important: Never shoot anything you are not going to eat. You can always donate the meat to a homeless shelter.

Reminder: Remember to sight in your rifle before going hunting. Also, it is advisable to carry a handgun.

WARNING: The following video is graphic you may not want young children viewing this video.
