Firearm Forum Question: What is a Reasonable Price for an Extra Ruger Cylinder

Ask A Firearms Question:
Can you give me some guidance on how much I should pay for an Extra Ruger Revolver Cylinder?
Thank you Karl Zicon.

Answer :
Blog Administrator -
Always remember, the market drives the price, i.e. Economics 101, Law of Supply and Demand.

Saying that, Ruger Cowboy Single Action Revolver Cylinders are in two general categories, the original 3-Screw Version plus that next generation, and the current models which are mainly manufactured by third parties like Davidson and Lipsey.

If you can find an extra or replacement cylinder the Ruger Cowboy 22LR and 22 Magnum are the most commonly available and run about $125.00 on eBay. The 357 Magnum and 44 Magnum are going between $95.00 and $125.00. The 45 Long Colt (LC) is around $75.00. The 45 acp goes for around $125.00. The 41 Magnum and 44-40, which are rare can be upwards of $175.00. The later version 9mm and 30 Caliber are $125.00 to $200.00.
Special Note: Lately the 357 Magnum has been popular because these can be bored out to accept a 9mm and 44-40. See pictures of some Ruger cylinders below:

Ruger 357 Magnum Cylinder -
Ruger 45acp and 45 LC (Long Colt) Cylinders -
Ruger Factory Blackhawk Original 45acp Cylinder -

Bearcat and Bisley Ruger Cylinders often are engraved -

If you are shopping for an extra or replacement cylinder, be patient, and check eBay frequently to find what you want.

The double Action Ruger Cylinders (all calibers) are around $125.00, make sure these are complete with the ejector rod.
Parts of a Double Action Revolver -

The prices above do not include the old Ruger Black Powder Revolvers, or conversion cylinders which can still be purchased new for around $230.00.
Ruger 45 Long Colt Black Powder Cylinder -
Commentary -
The older Ruger cylinders are getting harder to find and more expensive. Double Action Revolver Cylinders are NOT interchangeable with Cowboy style Single Action Handgun Cylinders.

Disclaimer -
The prices above are a guideline based on current market at time of the post.

==> My recommendation is -
Make damn sure the Ruger cylinder you purchase is for your Ruger Revolver.

Firearm Forum Question: What is a Fluted Cylinder

Ask A Firearms Question:
What is a Flutted Cylinder and what is its purpose?
Thank you Luck 8.

Ruger Cowboy Six Gun with Smooth Cylinder .....

Ruger Cowboy Six Gun with Fluted Cylinder .....

Answer :
Blog Administrator -
Fluted versus full smooth cylinder is a design whereby some of the material (metal) of the cylinder is cut out of the surface to reduce the weight. These cut outs are groves in the cylinder and do not affect the performance of the revolver.
In some cases barrels are fluted, especially sniper style rifles.
Both style cylinders can be found on Single Action and Double Action Revolvers made by Ruger, Colt, and Smith-Wesson.
Many cowboy shooters with single action revolvers prefer fluted cylinders because it aids in indexing the cylinder (lining up the cylinder with your fingers with the chambers).
Originally all cylinders were made smooth.
Larger caliber handguns such as the 44 magnum more weight is preferred to reduce the recoil.
Smaller handgun calibers like the .22, 38, and 357 make the gun lighter and easier to use for most people.
I own a Ruger Birds Head Cowboy Revolver and have interchangeable cylinders that include 45 Long Colt, 45 ACP, and 41 Magnum all of which are fluted, and a 44 Magnum that is not fluted (smooth).
A lot of people think the Fluted Cylinder is more aesthetic looking.
See pictures above.

Commentary -
There are no issues on owning either a Fluted or Smooth Cylinder. It is a personal preference. I would recommend a smooth cylinder on larger calibers such as the 44 Magnum, 30 Caliber, 454 Casull. etc.
==> My recommendation on Cylinders is -
a BUY by Personal Choice.

Firearm Forum Question: Ruger Revolver Product Warning Notice

Ask A Firearms Question:
Recently bought a 3-Screw Ruger Blackhawk Revolver. I was told at the local gun range these have a Ruger Recall, is this correct, and if so, what prompted the recall notice?
Thank you Jimmy Says.

On a 3 Screw Ruger Revolver, the screws are clearly shown and visible:
Typical Ruger Cowboy Single Six Revolver with 3 Screws ....
Typical Ruger Single Six Convertible Cowboy Revolver with 3 Screws ....
From Ruger's Website - Product Warning Notice ....

Current Cowboy Revolvers from Ruger's Website (the 3 Screws have been changed to 2-Screws) ....

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Ruger issued some time back a Product Warning for all 3-Screw Model Revolvers, commonly found in Cowboy Shooter Handguns.

The 3-Screw Model is easy to identify.
One side of the revolver will have 3 visible screws under the Revolver Cylinder.
These Models do not have a transfer bar and can cause a discharge if the firearm is bumped or dropped with a live round in the cylinder chamber.

If you have one of these older Ruger Models, Ruger will do an upgrade free of charge. Contact Ruger and get a shipping box and send the entire handgun back to them.

Three frame screws identify the 'old model' (Pre-1973) Single Six, Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk revolvers. Serial numbers below 93-00000 identify old Bearcat and Super Bearcat models. If your revolver has the words 'New Model', 'Bisley', 'Vaquero', or 'Old Army' on the frame, this offer is not applicable.

I actually know a fellow cowboy SASS shooter who's 3-screw handgun fell out of his holster and discharged.

Safety First: When I carry my Ruger Six Shooter Cowboy Vaquero Birds Head 45
I never ever have a loaded round in the cylinder the hammer rest on.

Firearm Forum Question: 45 ACP CCI Shotshell Review for Self-Defense

Ask A Firearms Question:
Are 45 ACP Shot Shells from CCI effective for self defense?
Thank you Mr. Nowhere

The 45acp CCI Shot Shell, comes 10 cartridges per box.
CCI states that the 45acp ammo is for Snakes, Pest, Rodents, and Small Varmints.
The plastic tipped capsule contains #9 Shot and produces a 15 to 18 foot spread pattern at a firing distance of 15 feet with a muzzle velocity of 1,100 fps. The Youtube Video posted below shows testing the ammo under real conditions. The retail price is expensive at about $2.00 per round ($20.00 per box).

Important Note: If you elect to purchase any of this type of ammunition check to make sure the plastic cap containing the shot pellets is not cracked or broken. Shot shell pellets that come lose could damage your handgun.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
NO, the CCI Birdshot ammo that comes in 22LR, 9mm, 45acp, and 45LC are designed for small varmints and snakes. The Youtube Video below pretty much shows the effectiveness of putting birdshot in a 45 ACP Cartridge.
You could get better results by loading your own ammo, especially in a 45 Long Colt such as my Ruger Vaquero Single Action Revolver, but again it still would be for varmints and snakes more than use on a 2-legged creature known as man.

Youtube Video of a 45 ACP Semi-Auto Handgun Firing CCI Birdshot

Pellet Shot Size Chart, notice #9 Shot on the Chart:
Conclusion: I would not recommend any of these ammo calibers for self-defense. Use the ammunition for what it was designed for; or don't use them at all. Also I think they are too expensive for what you get.

Firearm Forum Question: What is a Free Spinning Revolver Cylinder

Ask A Firearms Question:
What is a free spinning revolver cylinder?
Thank you James Condor

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
I have included my own video of a Free Spinning Cylinder on my Ruger Vaquero Birdshead 45LC Cowboy Revolver.
A free spinning cylinder is an upgrade to the standard cowboy single action revolver whereby the cylinder turns on each cartridge every time you pull the hammer back; or when opening the 'Loading Gate' and placing the hammer in a half cock position and moving the cylinder one turn to the right (clockwise). Ruger Cowboy Revolvers do not need to have the hammer pulled back for this action. The FREE Spinning cylinder modifies the internal mechanism of the revolver allowing it to spin freely in either direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) when the 'Loading Gate' is open.
Note: The free spinning cylinder plus a trigger action enhancement (known as a trigger job) plus the honing [porting of the cylinder chambers and barrel breach port is known as a 'Cowboy Action Job']. Most cowboy shooters have had their revolvers modified with a complete action job as I have had on my Ruger Vaquero Birds Head 45 Long Colt (LC) Cowboy Revolver.
Important: This upgrade should be performed by a qualified gunsmith.

Firearm Forum Question: Dry Firing a Cowboy Six Shooter, Single Action Revolver

Ask A Firearms Question:
I have a Ruger Blackhawk 38/357 with interchangeable 9mm cylinder. I bought this a few years back and mostly shoot 9mm now because of the cost of ammo. I also have a cowboy fast draw holster.
My question is: Can I dry fire my Ruger Single Six Blackhawk Revolver without damaging it?
Thank you Las LaRue.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
The answer for RUGER Cowboy style revolver Owners is Yes.
Dry firing a Ruger will not harm the handgun, and that's straight from Ruger. I once owned the Blackhawk, and currently own the Vaquero which both were dry fired repeatedly.
I know a lot of Colt cowboy shooters and they generally use dummy rounds in their Single Action Revolvers.
Uberti and other Colt Clone knockoffs I would recommend you use dummy rounds.
Note: The Caliber on a Ruger does not matter on dry firing.

Firearm Forum Question: Cowboy Revolver, Which is Best - Ruger, Colt, or Uberti

Ask A Firearms Question:
I am recently retired and want to get into some Cowboy Shooting. Which 45lc (long colt) western fast draw revolver is the best to own?
Thank you Fuzzy McGee.

Note: The following three pictures are taken directly from the manufactures websites to show the latest 45lc (Long Colt) cowboy single action revolvers.

Ruger SASS Model 45lc Western Revolver.
Colt Single Action 45lc Army Revolver.
Uberti 1873 Cattleman 45lc Revolver.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
I own or have owned all three manufactured brands, Ruger, Colt, and Uberti in 45lc (Long Colt).
I prefer the Ruger, as do many SASS shooters.
Colt is an excellent firearm, but no longer has the quality once associated with these handguns. Ruger in my opinion has the current preferred quality and better action right out of the box. Uberti is a knockoff and has several versions, they shoot okay but I sold mine.
Keep in mind any 45 long colt style western single action cowboy handgun is using the basic Colt Patent to make the handgun. Both Ruger and Colt are way overpriced. If you are thinking of buying a cowboy action revolver, look for a used one, preferably a Ruger with interchangeable 45lc/45acp cylinders. Either new or used, to get the best performance you will need a complete action job performed by a gunsmith. This will entail boring and honing the cylinders, a trigger job, and I recommend a free spinning cylinder action be added. The estimated additional cost for this work including parts is around $250.00. SASS can probably recommend a gunsmith in your area to do the work (see website link on my page).
If you can find a reasonably priced used Colt in good condition made before 1990 buy it.
Also you may consider buying a cowboy action revolver in 22 long rifle because these are fun to shoot and inexpensive. 45 Long Colt (45lc) is expensive and reloading your own requires an initial set-up of around $1,000.00, Dillion Precision Reloading (see website link on my page).
You will also need a good cowboy action fast draw holster. You can get a new 100 percent all leather holster with belt for around $100.00 at a gun show. I own two different styles of fast draw holsters (one black, one brown), and one cross draw holster.
Note: Cross Draw Holsters are NOT for fast action, and they normally cost without a belt for 100 percent all leather around $150.00.

Firearm Forum Question: Ruger Cowboy Revolvers

Ask A Firearms Question:
I have been looking to add a 45 ACP revolver cylinder to my Ruger 45lc (Long Colt), Ruger has been little or no help, what advice can you give me?
Thank you C. Rosco Harper.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
These were available in both the Ruger Blackhawk and Vaquero models. Ruger sold the rights to make this combination (45lc/45acp) to Lipsey's Guns and Davidson's (Gallery of Guns) by model (see Ruger's website). Ruger nor it's exclusive distributors will sell just the 45 acp revolver cylinder. Ruger, however, will replace either the 45lc or the 45acp cylinder if one of them is lost, stolen, or damaged if and only if the firearm (Vaquero, Blackhawk) were originally purchased as a combination from Ruger. Call Ruger, get a return authorization number for the revolver and ship it back. The estimated cost for fitting a new cylinder by Ruger is approximately $135.00.
Important Safety Fact: If you acquire a Ruger 45 ACP Cylinder for your revolver it must be fitted and configured by a gunsmith. Do not attempt to shoot your firearm without having it properly fitted.
Background: Many SASS shooters use Ruger 45lc revolvers. Since the cost of 45lc ammo has skyrocketed owning a single cylinder 45lc is no longer practical. Therefore, many shooters want a combination 45lc/45acp because the 45 acp ammo at the the moment is less expensive to shoot. If you own any 45lc revolver, you need to reload your own ammo. At minimum save the brass, cowboy shooters will buy it.
I suggest looking on Gun Broker periodically for a 45 acp cylinder for your needs. The current market shows these selling for around $85.00.
Ruger's Poor Marketing Approach: In my opinion, Ruger has taken a very dismal marketing approach by licensing specific models to exclusive distributors. Also, the demand for 45acp cylinders for both the Vaquero and Blackhawk 45lc revolvers warrant making these 45 acp cylinders available for direct sale.
Ruger Firearms and Your Revolver: If you have had any Cowboy style action job performed on your Ruger revolver, do NOT return it to Ruger. Ruger, along with most firearms manufactures will return the firearm to it's original specs before returning it to you.
