Firearm Forum Question: What's the Difference between .223 and 5.56 Ammo

Ask A Firearms Question:
What's the difference between .223 and 5.56 Ammo? I am new to the AR.
Thank you Stephanie Anderson.

The .223 Ammo Round shown next to the 5.56 Ammo round:
.223 versus 5.56 Mil Spec Cartridges ....

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
The .223 round was the first evolution of the AR15 platform used in Vietnam. Later it was expanded to the 5.56 (5.56x45mm NATO) round. While the cartridge diameters are essential the same, the 5.56 is generally a little longer (see picture above), and the chamber pressure is greater than the .223 commercial round set by SAMMI for those chamber limits.
The bottom line is the rounds are almost identical except for the pressure tolerances and limits placed on the firearm. A 5.56 AR15 Platform Rifle can fire either a .223 or a 5.56 round, but a .223 chambered firearm cannot fire a 5.56 round. Always check the firearm to make sure it is stamped 5.56 Caliber (see pictures below). When the switchover occurred some of the older firearms still had .233 Caliber stamped on the rifle. When in doubt consult the firearm manual, or call the manufacturer with the serial number (S/N) and they will advised you.

The following photos show Modern AR15 Platform Assault Rifles clearly marked with 5.56 Caliber on frame:
Armalite ....
Bushmaster ....
Colt ....
DPMS ....

STAG ....
NOTE: There are many makers and manufacturers of the AR15 in both the 5.56 and the 308 NATO Calibers, the above are just a sample ....

Firearm Forum Question: How to Protect Your Rifle Barrel Using a Condom

Ask A Firearms Question:
Hello, I would like to suggest a new topic forum. How about the use of Condoms on Rifles and Shotguns?
Thank you Condom Facts

The DPMS Panther AR-15 Carbine:
Non Lubricated Condom Individual Packs, sold in various brands:
box of Non Lubricated Condoms:
Note: Individual Trojan brand Condom Packages inside the box are blue color.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes, CONDOMS are a great way to protect your rifle and shotgun barrel. The use of condoms to keep rain and dust out of rifles goes back to the Vietnam War when soldiers would cover their M16 Rifles with a condom to keep the monsoon rains out.
This practice is also great for hunters whereby they often encounter rain, sleet, and snow.
The condom protects the firearm, and when needed to be used, the bullet or pellets simply pass right through the thin non-lubricated latex material covering the barrel end.

Please see my Instructional Video showing how to properly cover the end of your barrel.
Note the video has no sound:

Instructions for Applying a CONDOM to a Rifle Barrel:
Step 1) Acquire a Non Lubricated Latex Condom (any brand).
Step 2) You will also need a small rubber band or twisty tie.
Step 3) Remove the condom from the wrapper.
Step 4) Securing the Rifle, gently slide the condom over the tip of the barrel until it is fully extended. Caution, do not pull the condom too tight at the end of the barrel you will tear it.
Step 5) Using either a small rubber band or a twisty tie secure the condom around the barrel so it does not come off.
Note: I use a rubber band to install the Condom, then apply a twisty tie closer to the bottom of the condom to keep it from moving, see the 2 photos below of my DPMS Panther AR-15 5.56 Carbine:

Firearm Forum Question: How to Keep Scope Mount Screws from Coming Lose

Ask A Firearms Question:
Can you please give some advice on how to keep my Scope Mount Screws from coming lose?
Thank you Captain Hook Knook

Scope Rings and Scope Mounts:

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes, the best way to keep screws and nuts tight on firearm accessories such as scopes is to use Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242, see pictures above.
Apply a small amount to threaded area of the nut or screw that goes into the mount or ring. This particular product keeps most screws and nuts tight but is not permanent and you can still remove the accessory device such as a scope without damaging the screw, nut, device, or firearm. In some cases it may be beneficial to apply the Loctite to the backside of the screw slot, each type of device is different.
Important: Never tighten the screws or nuts to tight, they strip easily and you can damage the device, especially a scope. Also Loctite makes several products so make sure you buy the correct one I have listed.

Firearm Forum Question: Legally Convert Your AR15 to Full Automatic

Ask A Firearms Question:
I understand that a company sells a legal conversion for an AR-15 Assault Rifle from Semi-Auto to Full Automatic, is this true and who makes it?
Thank you Mortal Combat

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes, it is true that a company called Slide Fire (see Link below) called the SSAR-15 makes a stock conversion for a Standard AR-15 Mil Spec designed rifle. The conversion applies a principal that allows the stock to Bump Fire thus converting a standard semi auto legally issued assault style rifle to full auto. The ATF and Justice Dept in the USA have issued a letter that comes with the conversion kit stating the Bump Fire stock is legal to own and use. Sure Fire is 100 percent American Made.
The Youtube Video below shows how to install the device on an AR15 with a test fire in the full auto position.

)

My opinion and comments: I considered purchasing one of these for my DPMS AR-15, 223/5.56 M4 Style Carbine but decided against it. After consulting with several people this device over a period of time puts stress on the buffer tube and spring. On some rifles it also causes needed repair to the trigger and bolt assemblies. If I were to do this I would purchase one for my AK47 which are built more sturdy with heavier metal and can take the pounding.

Important: Before purchasing the Slide Fire bump fire stock conversion make sure it will fit on your weapon. Either contact the manufacturer of the rifle, example: DPMS; or call Slide Fire.

Cost: Ranges from $270.00 to $360.00 US Dollars for the AR15 conversion kit.

Here's the LINK to Slide Fire's Website:

Firearm Forum Question: What's the Best Type of Forward Grip for My Picatinny Rail

Ask A Firearms Question:
Thinking of adding a Forward Grip to my Picatinny Rail, anyone have a suggestion? What's the most popular and best to use?
Thank you Cranky Critter.

Here are some Picatinny Rail Forward Grip Types and Styles:
Forward Folding Hand Grip Type -
Standard Fixed Forward Grip Type -
Finger Forward Fixed Hand Grip Type -
Forward Fixed Grip with Bi-Pod Feature -

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
The best answer I can offer is try them out. Each person has their own likes and dislikes. I suggest going to a local Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop. You don't have to buy one there just try them.
Personally I have a Standard Fixed Forward Grip on my ArchAngel Conversion; and I have a Fixed Front Forward Grip with Bi-pod on my DPMS 556 M4 Carbine Assault Rifle. I don't have a forward grip on my AK-47 Cz made assault rifle.

Firearm Forum Question: Magazine Jamming

Ask A Firearms Question:
I would like to discuss Magazines and Jamming. Can we get a topic going here on the various reasons for jamming, and what magazines people like to use (brand and capacity), along with their issues and experiences?
Thank you Bear Claw Grizz Lap.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Great topic choice.
I have included some photos of various magazine types.
My comment is simple - Jamming is generally caused by five things:
1) A Dirty Firearm.
2) The Magazine is loaded to full capacity.
3) Poor quality magazine, off brand, el cheap-o.
4) Firing Blank Rounds in a semi-auto firearm.
5) Some Hollow Point Rounds may cause jamming.

Various types of Firearm Magazines:

100 Round Dual Drum Magazines for AR-15 Assault Rifle:
Stripper Clips, also known as Charger Clips, for Military style Rifles such as the M1 Carbine, M1 Garand 30-06 Semi-Auto Rifle (used in WWII), 303 Springfield, and the AK-47 Assault Rifle:

Firearm Forum Question: Should I Purchase a Gun Vice

Ask A Firearms Question:
Just wondering is a Gun Vice worth purchasing, and what one would anyone recommend?
Thank you Gary Jars.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes, I would recommend a Heavy Duty Gun Vice that can do rifles, shotguns, assault rifles, and handguns.
I recently purchased a Tipton Best Gun Vice from Cabelas for $49.00, but they are sold both in sporting goods shops and online.
A Gun Vice is great for maintenance, repair, and cleaning by holding the firearm in place without damaging the weapon. A gun vice is also good for using a Bore Light to sight your scope.
See pictures of the Tipton Gun Vice below:

Firearm Forum Question: Firing Blanks from Your Assault Rifle

Ask A Firearms Question:
Can I fire blank rounds through a typical U.S. or Soviet made Assault rifle?
Thank you Buckeye Football Fan.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes you can fire blanks from most civilian made assault rifles including the AR-15 and AK-47.
If you do not want to load the blanks one at a time, you will need a special device for firing blanks. This device is the same as the U.S. Military uses, see photo below. The device allows blanks to be fired rapidly and ejects the spent round without jamming. It fits over the end of assault rifle. I bought my blank adapter along with 500 rounds of 5.56 ammo blanks from United Nations Ammo in Phoenix, Arizona.

Firearm Forum Question: Using Steel Case or Lead Bullet Ammo

Ask A Firearms Question:
I have heard that you should not shoot steel case ammo through a modern 223/556 U.S. made assault rifle, like my Colt AR15, is this true?

Thank you Sammy da Shooter.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Steel case ammo is primarily a Russian or former Soviet Bloc country manufactured ammunition. TulAmmo is commonly found and sold here in the USA, and is Russian made, and imported. This ammo cost less than more popular brands and is sold by Wal-Mart in 20-round boxes of 223 Caliber, 55 Grain, FMJ, Steel Case, Burden Primed. It is also widely sold by bulk ammo suppliers in 1,000 round packs (boxes). Wal-Mart also sells 7.62x39, shown above.
The real negative about this ammo is that it's 'Burden Primed.' Burden Primed ammo cannot be reloaded, which makes it a no buy for many shooters who reload their own ammo.
As for the steel case, most of this is now coated.
Russian made firearms have been shooting steel case ammo since WWII.
TuAmmo makes for good plinking ammo (target shooting). Just simply take a wire brush on your cleaning rod and spray it with some WD-40, run it through the barrel down to the bore, then wipe it with a clean dry patch a few times. Finally take a cleaning patch with some light oil and run it through barrel.
I shoot this all the time, but I do not reload and I always immediately clean the bore after shooting.
For those that may think this is not true then evaluate this FACT – Most shooters have owned a 22 Caliber Rifle or Handgun during their lifetime. Even high quality ammo such as Winchester 22 Caliber has lead bullets. I have owned many 22 caliber rifles and handguns that I used both copper and lead in 22 LR (Long Rifle Ammo), and have been doing so for 50 years, and without any problems. I still shoot both in my Ruger 10/22 Rifle.
