Firearm Forum Question: What's the Difference Between an Open and Closed Bolt

Ask A Firearms Question:
Can you please tell me what the difference is between a Closed and Open Bolt?
Thank you Louis Lewis.

Answer :
Blog Administrator -
Yes, the primary difference is whether the weapon is firing in a semi automatic mode (the person pulls the trigger each time to fire one round through the weapon), or the weapon is full auto (when the trigger is pulled and held the weapon continues to fire until empty).

Generally speaking an Open Bolt weapon such as a MAC10 or Uzi is a full auto weapon (fully automatic, i.e. Machine Gun).

The Closed Bolt weapon is generally a Semi Automatic.

The following two YouTube Videos demonstrate an Open Bolt Weapon Firing in Full Auto (Machine Gun).

YouTube Video: Demonstrating Open Bolt Machine Guns for Beginners -

YouTube Video: Firing the MK 46 Mod 1 Lightened SAW -

Commentary -
Although Full Auto Weapons (Machine Guns) may be fun to shoot, they are a waste of ammo.

==> My recommendation is -
Avoid owning full auto weapons.
If you plan on purchasing a full auto weapon do your homework. A Federal Tax Stamp and other provisions are required.

Firearm Forum Question: What is M.O.A.

Ask A Firearms Question:
New to shooting with a scope. Can you explain and define MOA?
How does MOA determine the Rifle Scope I use?
Thank you Ty Haden.

Subsequent related question -
I have a Remington Model 750, 30-06 Rifle. I want to install a Picatinny Rail on my Rifle. How many minutes of angel does this rifle have?
Thank you Mr. Puma.

MOA is an abbreviation that stands for -
Method of Angle
The Definition of M.O.A. is:
MOA is essential a convenient method for shooters using English units to measure angle.
One (1) MOA = 1.0472 Inches at 100 Yards (91.44 meters).
Rifle Scope Manufacturers and Shooters both simply round the 1 MOA = 1 Inch, which makes MOA a handy unit to use in ballistics.
One of the most common reticles in Optics is to use a Red Dot which is placed on the target by the shooter. These are generally a small Red Dot measured in 5 MOA. The Dot size is generally 1.5 mrad which is small enough not to obscure the target but large enough to quickly acquire a target.
Many Optics now offer a combination of Green Dot and Red Dot. Green Dots are more visible during bright sunlight and Red Dots work better in cloudy overcast daylight, indoor shooting ranges, or night vision. These optic devices use a battery and project a dot to the target. Correct acquisition (aiming) is done by adjustments up or down and right and left, which is referred to as Vertical and Horizontal, the same method used in a Rifle Scope.
Often times in action shooting with a handgun, a larger dot is used for fast movement and accuracy.
Rifle Scopes do not use projected color optics, instead they place a cross hair or cross with a dot on the target of vision that is seen by looking through the scope with the naked eye, see photos below ....

Many Shooters use a Rangefinder to establish the distance from their shooting point to the target. This device simply sends out a laser beam and measures the distance from the target to the front of the rangefinder. These are very handy when not shooting at a gun range with pre marked target distances.
I personally use a Leupold GX-3, shown below ...

Answer :

M.O.A. or Method of Angle is not complicated to understand if you do not read more into it than simply follow the use.
Below are 2 Youtube Videos.
The first video explains MOA in detail and how to use Method of Angle for Shooting.
The second Video explains how to choose a Rifle Scope for your needs.

As to how many minutes of angle a particular rifle has varies on every rifle, type of scope and optics used. Consult both the manual of the firearm and the manual for the scope or optics used. Hopefully the two videos below will also lend some assistance, see more after the videos.

Firearm Forum Question: Buying a AR15 308 NATO Assault Rifle

Ask A Firearms Question:
I am seriously interested in buying a AR style .308 caliber rifle, cost and quality are factors. It must be Mil Spec.  So, what are your best recommendations of all the available brands? I've handled several at small FB shops and even big box stores and it is a bit confusing.
Thank you Bob Cooper.

Commonly used Assault Weapon Weights ....

The AR 15 308:
DPMS 308 NATO ....

Armalite Sporting Rifle DEF10, 308 NATO ....

Bushmaster XM-10 308 ORC, 308 Winchester 7.62x51 ....

About the AR 308 NATO Platform ....

Answer :
Blog Administrator -
When choosing the AR 308 it is important to remember that there is a difference between the 308 Winchester Caliber and the 308 NATO (7.62x51mm) Round. Make sure you always purchase a platform AR firearm that can shoot the 308 Winchester, which has a higher pressure. This allows you to use hunting ammo and avoids any mistakes in loading the wrong cartridge that could result in a damaged firearm or personal injury. Before purchase, consult the AR Manufacturer and make sure the 308 Winchester Cartridge can be used.

As for the question, which 308 AR to choose, my recommendations are as follows:
1) Again I must stress if you are determined to buy a 308 AR Platform make sure it will accept the 308 Winchester Round.
2) These can be quite costly depending on how you outfit them, i.e. Picatinny Rail accessories; optics / scope; sling; bi-pod; magazine capacity; number of magazines; etc.
3) You may want to look into a USED AR 308, many of which have all ready been outfitted with a variety of accessories, you can generally save 20 to 50 percent on cost over a New purchase.
Some places to look for a Used AR -
** GunBroker.com
** Phoenix AZ backpage
** Local Pawn Shops
4) I suggest going to various gun shops, holding different brands of AR15 308's, look for how it feels to you, watch out for heavy weighted front end weapons.

==> As for a choice if I were buying a 308 AR new or used my first choice would be a DPMS.
Armalite and Bushmaster are also good choices.

Personal Note -
I am not a fan of the AR 308 NATO Platform assault rifle.
Better choice is the AK-47, 7.62x39mm. You can generally buy 2 rounds of AK ammo for the price of one 308 NATO round. The AK shoots any brand, is reliable, and the number one choice of assault rifle around the world.

Ask A Firearms Question:
Is there a Product Warning and Safety Notice -or- Recall on Amrscor Ammunition? There has been a lot of reported issues with this ammo including damage firearms from using this product. Please tell us what's up with all this Armscor Ammo Failures.
Thank you Simon McQueen.

Answer :
Blog Administrator -
I have researched this and at the time of this posting there is no official Product Recall or Warning out from Armscor Ammunition about any safety issues. I checked there website and found nothing except a list of ammo products they sell which I have included above.
This concerns me from the aspect that numerous incidents have occurred using this ammo in various calibers including severe damage to firearms and some injuries have been reported.
See Youtube Video below on documentary of user that had a bad experience.
I have included my opinion below.

Youtube Video: Armscor 22LR Ammo Failure ....
Note - On my previous Topic Post, Remington was having issues with their Model 597 Semi Auto Rifle that is discussed in this video.

Some other reported incidents, posted to the Internet, using Armscor Ammo:
1) Was out firing my sig mosquito today and a round of armscor ammunition (.22lr) exploded inside the weapon spraying fragments into face.. Was NOT fun , managed to recover the exploded rim on the ground, and upon closer inspection of the weapon noticed that the rest of the brass was lodged inside the chamber and was removed with a cleaning rod and a small mallet.

2) One piece of ammo was so overloaded with gunpowder that it blew up in my face. It destroyed the German-made .22 caliber pistol I recently bought at the last gun show. I was lucky I was wearing protective shooting glasses when I fired the Armscor .22 caliber ammo because my eyes would have been hit by the gunpowder residue.
3) Other failures have included bad ammo in 22LR; 223; 9mm; and 45 acp. These failures range from misfires to jammed rounds to split casings.

Some reported posted Armscor Ammo failures and firearm damage:
.223 / 5.56 AR15 Assaut Rifle ....
22 Caliber LR Ruger 10/22 Rifle Magazine ....

My Opinion -
I have some Armscor 22LR. I have not fired it so I have no personal experience with this ammo.
My suggestion is examine all Armscor Ammo before use.
Look for the following ....
1) Expanded shell casings
2) Lose bullets
3) Bulge casings
4) Bulge in the primers

Recommendations:
If you are nervous about using this ammo, sell it or dispose of it safely.
I would inspect all Amrscor Ammo before use.

Conclusion:
I am baffled as to why Armscor has not had a Product Recall on the Lot Numbers affected.
Also people experiencing these issues should contact the ATF/BATF and file a complaint immediately.
If your firearm has been damaged or you were injured in the use of this ammo, consult an attorney at once.
