Firearm Forum Question: Winchester Lever Action Rifles, Product Warning Notice

Is there a Product Recall on the Winchester Model 94 Lever Action Rifle? I have heard there is, and then heard there is no recall. I recently purchased a used Model 94, 30-30 Caliber Lever Action Rifle for Hunting, and I am reluctant to now use it?

This is a nebulas area. Winchester claims it is not an official 'Recall Notice' but rather a 'Product Warning for Gun Owners', this is per Winchester's website. The entire 'Product Warning Notice is posted below along with the LINK to Winchester Firearms Page.

 Note: Some of the Models noted below are Bolt Action Rifles.

 Personally, if you own one of these Winchester Rifles listed below, I would have it checked out by a qualified Gunsmith, preferably one that specializes in Winchester Firearms Products.

WINCHESTER® Model 94 Family of Lever-Action Rifles, Carbines, and Muskets with Half-Cock Safety.

The Olin Corporation, through its Winchester Division, is warning users of the above firearms that when there is a live cartridge in the chamber, dropping, jarring or bumping the firearm may cause an accidental discharge, which may result in property damage, serious personal injury or death to the user or others:
With the hammer in the full-down position, a slight impact to, or bumping the hammer can cause a discharge.
With the hammer in the half-cock safety position, a hard impact to the hammer, such as from dropping the firearm, can break the safety mechanism and cause a discharge.
With the hammer in any position, a hard impact, such as from dropping or jarring the firearm, can cause a discharge, even if the hammer is not impacted.
To reduce the risk of accidental discharge, follow safe firearm handling practices, including:
Always maintain control of the firearm and keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction at all times.
Never place the hammer in the full-down position when there is a live cartridge in the chamber.
Never rely on the half-cock safety to prevent accidental discharge due to dropping or jarring the firearm, or hard impacts to the hammer.
When there is a live cartridge in the chamber, avoid activities that increase the risk of dropping or jarring the rifle, such as running, climbing, crossing a fence, and taking the firearm up and down from a tree stand.

Firearm Forum Question: 12 Gauge versus 20 Gauge Shotguns

I just bought a Mossberg 20-Gauge Persuader Shotgun, which shotgun is best a 12 Gauge or 20 Gauge?

To determine what is the best shot shell diameter size that is best for you (most common are the 410-Gauge; 20-Gauge; and 12-Gauge) the end use drives the final decision. Shotguns are used for sport (Trap and Skeet, or Hunting), and for Home Defense. Some people elect to use a Shotgun for both purposes. To be used for both purposes they need to be full size, not shorten as you may find in a Self Defense Tactical style Shotgun.
A Shotgun may also be used for Cowboy Shooting these are generally double barrel coach style shotguns. They maybe with or without hammers. They may also be lever action shotguns.
Also note there are two other gauges: a 10-Gauge and a 16-Gauge.
The next consideration is who will use the shotgun. Children under the age of 15 and women with small frames will find the 410-Gauge quite accommodating for hunting. Adult women generally prefer the 20-Gauge for either Hunting or Tactical / Home Defense because the 20-gauge has less recoil. Adult men generally prefer the 12-gauge for all uses.
Next thing to look at is the shot shell length capacity. A shotgun chambered that can handle 3-inch shells can shoot 3-inch, 2 3/4-inch, and 2 1/2-inch shells. In other words you can go down in length but not up, i.e. a shotgun chambered for 2 3/4-inch shotgun shells cannot handle a 3-inch shell.
Capacity is the next thing to consider. Semi-auto and Pump Shotguns will hold the most rounds. Double Barrel and Over/Under Shotguns handle 2-rounds only. Single Barrel (common in 410-gauge and 20-gauge) hold one round.
Cost may be a factor as well both in ammo and firearm. Shotguns do NOT have to be expensive to work well. I have owned Stevens/Savage, Mossberg, Remington, Ithaca, Winchester, and Saiga Shotguns.
Generally 12-Gauge Shotgun Shells are less expensive than any of the others. Again brand doesn't play a really big part in standard shot size. I have used everything on the market at one time or another. 12-Gauge and sometimes 20-Gauge can be bought in bulk keeping the per unit cost down.
Some people for home defense like the Pump Shotgun, they say if an intruder hears the pump action it will frighten the Intruder/Burglar away. Personally I think that is a bunch of bunk simply because in the middle of the night you are sleeping and don't want to think about trying to pump a round into the shotgun that should all ready be loaded and ready to fire.
The most common question I get is 'What Shot Shell Size (load number) should I use for Home Defense?'
All my shotguns are loaded with #6 Shot, this works the best for Home Defense. It has lethal impact and a good spread that covers the entire doorway or window where an intruder would be coming through.

 => To answer your question, again who is going to use this Shotgun only you, or others in the house such as your wife. If others are possible users the 20-Guage probably is the better choice. But in either case both will work.

Firearm Forum Question: How to Protect Your Rifle Barrel Using a Condom

Yes, CONDOMS are a great way to protect your rifle and shotgun barrel. The use of condoms to keep rain and dust out of rifles goes back to the Vietnam War when soldiers would cover their M16 Rifles with a condom to keep the monsoon rains out.
This practice is also great for hunters whereby they often encounter rain, sleet, and snow.
The condom protects the firearm, and when needed to be used, the bullet or pellets simply pass right through the thin non-lubricated latex material covering the barrel end.

 Please see my Instructional Video showing how to properly cover the end of your barrel.

Instructions for Applying a CONDOM to a Rifle Barrel:
Step 1) Acquire a Non Lubricated Latex Condom (any brand).
Step 2) You will also need a small rubber band or twisty tie.
Step 3) Remove the condom from the wrapper.
Step 4) Securing the Rifle, gently slide the condom over the tip of the barrel until it is fully extended. Caution, do not pull the condom too tight at the end of the barrel you will tear it.
Step 5) Using either a small rubber band or a twisty tie secure the condom around the barrel so it does not come off.
Note: I use a rubber band to install the Condom, then apply a twisty tie closer to the bottom of the condom to keep it from moving, see the 2 photos below of my DPMS Panther AR-15 5.56 Carbine:
