Firearm Forum Question: What is M.O.A.

Ask A Firearms Question:
New to shooting with a scope. Can you explain and define MOA?
How does MOA determine the Rifle Scope I use?
Thank you Ty Haden.

Subsequent related question -
I have a Remington Model 750, 30-06 Rifle. I want to install a Picatinny Rail on my Rifle. How many minutes of angel does this rifle have?
Thank you Mr. Puma.

MOA is an abbreviation that stands for -
Method of Angle
The Definition of M.O.A. is:
MOA is essential a convenient method for shooters using English units to measure angle.
One (1) MOA = 1.0472 Inches at 100 Yards (91.44 meters).
Rifle Scope Manufacturers and Shooters both simply round the 1 MOA = 1 Inch, which makes MOA a handy unit to use in ballistics.
One of the most common reticles in Optics is to use a Red Dot which is placed on the target by the shooter. These are generally a small Red Dot measured in 5 MOA. The Dot size is generally 1.5 mrad which is small enough not to obscure the target but large enough to quickly acquire a target.
Many Optics now offer a combination of Green Dot and Red Dot. Green Dots are more visible during bright sunlight and Red Dots work better in cloudy overcast daylight, indoor shooting ranges, or night vision. These optic devices use a battery and project a dot to the target. Correct acquisition (aiming) is done by adjustments up or down and right and left, which is referred to as Vertical and Horizontal, the same method used in a Rifle Scope.
Often times in action shooting with a handgun, a larger dot is used for fast movement and accuracy.
Rifle Scopes do not use projected color optics, instead they place a cross hair or cross with a dot on the target of vision that is seen by looking through the scope with the naked eye, see photos below ....

Many Shooters use a Rangefinder to establish the distance from their shooting point to the target. This device simply sends out a laser beam and measures the distance from the target to the front of the rangefinder. These are very handy when not shooting at a gun range with pre marked target distances.
I personally use a Leupold GX-3, shown below ...

M.O.A. or Method of Angle is not complicated to understand if you do not read more into it than simply follow the use.
Below are 2 Youtube Videos.
The first video explains MOA in detail and how to use Method of Angle for Shooting.
The second Video explains how to choose a Rifle Scope for your needs.

As to how many minutes of angle a particular rifle has varies on every rifle, type of scope and optics used. Consult both the manual of the firearm and the manual for the scope or optics used. Hopefully the two videos below will also lend some assistance, see more after the videos.

Firearm Forum Question: Testing the Izor Armory Rifle Flash Hider and Suppressor

Ask A Firearms Question:
No question today ...
This is my personal 'Review' of Izor Armory Flash Hider/Compensator and Rifle Suppressor on two different 300 Winchester Magnum Rifles; a Remington 700 USMC Sniper Rifle, and a Savage Hunting Rifle.

My personal REVIEW of the Product below ...
The two rifles, a Remington and Savage both with Scopes and both in 300 Winchester Magnum had threaded barrels with Flash Hiders added. The TEST was conducted at the Ben Avery Outdoor Shooting Range. It was very windy with blowing dust, 20 Mph gust to 26 Mph. The range was busy with a lot of shooters.
The Db (decibel) rating average without Suppressor (silencer) was ...
Remington 300 Win Mag USMC Sniper Rifle = 150 Db.
Savage 300 Win Mag Hunting Rifle = 145 Db
The Db (decibel) rating average with Suppressor (silencer) for both Rifles was ...
130 Db

Target Distance was 100 Yards.

Ammo (ammunition) used for TEST ....
Federal Deer Thugs, 300 Win Mag, 180 Grain Bonded Soft Point -
Muzzle Velocity - 2,950 fps
At 100 Yards = 2,760 fps

Answer / Review:
Blog Administrator -
The Threaded Barrel and Flash Hider / Compensator done by Izor Armory performed perfectly on both rifles.
The Rifle Suppressor (silencer) greatly reduced the sound but still would be fairly audible at around 130Db.
Izor's Steel Rifle Suppressors, however, are designed to work on any Rifle from 30 Caliber through 300 Win Mag. Performing this well on a 300 Winchester Magnum Caliber would reflect a BUY recommendation for rifles like the 300 Blackout or the AR15 Platform in 5.56.
In addition, Izor Armory Rifle Suppressors are reasonably priced compared to other similar manufacturers on the market for the same use.

Firearm Forum Question: What's the Difference between .223 and 5.56 Ammo

Ask A Firearms Question:
What's the difference between .223 and 5.56 Ammo? I am new to the AR.
Thank you Stephanie Anderson.

The .223 Ammo Round shown next to the 5.56 Ammo round:
.223 versus 5.56 Mil Spec Cartridges ....

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
The .223 round was the first evolution of the AR15 platform used in Vietnam. Later it was expanded to the 5.56 (5.56x45mm NATO) round. While the cartridge diameters are essential the same, the 5.56 is generally a little longer (see picture above), and the chamber pressure is greater than the .223 commercial round set by SAMMI for those chamber limits.
The bottom line is the rounds are almost identical except for the pressure tolerances and limits placed on the firearm. A 5.56 AR15 Platform Rifle can fire either a .223 or a 5.56 round, but a .223 chambered firearm cannot fire a 5.56 round. Always check the firearm to make sure it is stamped 5.56 Caliber (see pictures below). When the switchover occurred some of the older firearms still had .233 Caliber stamped on the rifle. When in doubt consult the firearm manual, or call the manufacturer with the serial number (S/N) and they will advised you.

Firearm Forum Question: Threading a Hunting Rifle Barrel and Adding a Flash Hider

Ask A Firearms Question:
What is your thoughts on Threading a Hunting Rifle Barrel and Adding a Flash Hider?
Thank you John Paul Steckler the 8th.

Example:
Savage 300 Winchester Magnum Rifle ....
Savage Rifle Barrel before Threading and Flash Hider Added ....
Rifle after being Threaded and Flash Hider added ...

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
For the most part it is an excellent idea. Adding a Flash Hider on a large caliber center fire hunting rifle can reduce the recoil by 25 to 40 percent.
I recently had my Savage 300 Win Mag Barrel threaded and a Flash Hider added, see pictures above.
The downside is the front sight must be permanently removed. Also if this is a collector or high value rifle I wouldn't do it.
But on a standard modern Hunting Rifle like a Savage or Remington that is all ready outfitted with a Rifle Scope I would recommend it.
Note - Many New Hunting Rifles do not come with Iron Sights.
Also once the barrel is threaded it can now accept a Suppressor (silencer).
Since the front sight has been removed the use of iron sights to sight in your target is pretty much out of the question so a Rifle Scope would be needed. Therefore, cost becomes an issue. If you all ready have a Rifle Scope mounted then get your Hunting Rifle Barrel Threaded and a Flash Hider added. Make sure you use a reputable gunsmith for threading otherwise the rifle barrel is rendered useless. You would then have to replace the entire barrel or cut the barrel length down. Also make sure you put on a quality Rifle Flash Hider these usually cost around $45.00 to $60.00. Threading a Rifle Barrel is between $65.00 and $135.00.
