Firearm Forum Question: What's the Best Type of Forward Grip for My Picatinny Rail

Ask A Firearms Question:
Thinking of adding a Forward Grip to my Picatinny Rail, anyone have a suggestion? What's the most popular and best to use?
Thank you Cranky Critter.

Here are some Picatinny Rail Forward Grip Types and Styles:
Forward Folding Hand Grip Type -
Standard Fixed Forward Grip Type -
Finger Forward Fixed Hand Grip Type -
Forward Fixed Grip with Bi-Pod Feature -

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
The best answer I can offer is try them out. Each person has their own likes and dislikes. I suggest going to a local Cabelas or Bass Pro Shop. You don't have to buy one there just try them.
Personally I have a Standard Fixed Forward Grip on my ArchAngel Conversion; and I have a Fixed Front Forward Grip with Bi-pod on my DPMS 556 M4 Carbine Assault Rifle. I don't have a forward grip on my AK-47 Cz made assault rifle.

Firearm Forum Question: Magazine Jamming

Ask A Firearms Question:
I would like to discuss Magazines and Jamming. Can we get a topic going here on the various reasons for jamming, and what magazines people like to use (brand and capacity), along with their issues and experiences?
Thank you Bear Claw Grizz Lap.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Great topic choice.
I have included some photos of various magazine types.
My comment is simple - Jamming is generally caused by five things:
1) A Dirty Firearm.
2) The Magazine is loaded to full capacity.
3) Poor quality magazine, off brand, el cheap-o.
4) Firing Blank Rounds in a semi-auto firearm.
5) Some Hollow Point Rounds may cause jamming.

Various types of Firearm Magazines:

100 Round Dual Drum Magazines for AR-15 Assault Rifle:
Stripper Clips, also known as Charger Clips, for Military style Rifles such as the M1 Carbine, M1 Garand 30-06 Semi-Auto Rifle (used in WWII), 303 Springfield, and the AK-47 Assault Rifle:

Firearm Forum Question: Advantages of Using a Rifle Scope Bore Sighter Kit

Ask A Firearms Question:
Is a Bore Scope really worth having to sight in my Rifle Scope? Should I invest in a Bore Scope and what are the advantages of using one?
Thank you Dastardly Dan.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
There is a difference between a Bore Scope and Rifle Scope Bore Sighter Kit.
A Rifle Bore Sighter Kit is used for sighting in Rifle, Shotgun, and Handgun Scopes, it generally comes with a kit that has different bore diameter tools to insert into the end of the rifle to sight in your scope.
I do not own one of these personally, but have friends that do own them and they sight my rifles in for me.
If you have more than two firearms with scopes mounted you may want to consider buying one. You will need a firearm vice to use it (this is for stability), such as a Tipton Best Gun Vice, and a clearing distance for the laser sight to fix on, usually a minimum of 25 feet. The vice and firearm will have to be set onto a table or workbench for accuracy.
There are a couple of manufacturers that make decent Bore Sighting Scope Kits for a reasonable cost,  usually less than $60.00, here are two:
Barska-Boresighter -
BSA Boresighter Kit -

There is an alternative called the AccuScope, which sells for under $20.00 and you can purchase it on amazon.com. I don't know anything about these, their sight has a video on how it works.

My friend let me borrow these pictures of his Remington Model 700, 300 Winchester Magnum USMC Custom Painted Rifle being sighted in using a Bore Sighter Kit. His was done by a Gunsmith. He took the pictures while the gunsmith was sighting in the scope. Note how the rifle is in a gun vice, on a bench, and the laser is pointed some distance to the opposite wall.

Important: A Bore Sighter Kit does not accurately set the Scope. It still takes a few shots (he said about 5), to get it dead center in the bullseye at 300 yards. The Bore Sighter gets the bullet onto the target to eliminate waste of ammo. Personally I sighted my rifle in at 100 yards with 3-rounds using a bore sighter.

NOTE: I am not suggesting anyone spend the money to buy any item I list here. Just presenting some options and trying to answer questions the best I can based on either my personal experience or of people I know that use one.
Comments and opinions are welcome, let the readers know your experiences.

Firearm Forum Question: Should I Purchase a Gun Vice

Ask A Firearms Question:
Just wondering is a Gun Vice worth purchasing, and what one would anyone recommend?
Thank you Gary Jars.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes, I would recommend a Heavy Duty Gun Vice that can do rifles, shotguns, assault rifles, and handguns.
I recently purchased a Tipton Best Gun Vice from Cabelas for $49.00, but they are sold both in sporting goods shops and online.
A Gun Vice is great for maintenance, repair, and cleaning by holding the firearm in place without damaging the weapon. A gun vice is also good for using a Bore Light to sight your scope.
See pictures of the Tipton Gun Vice below:

Firearm Forum Question: Hunting with the AR15 Rifle

Ask A Firearms Question:
Is it legal to hunt with my AR-15, 5.56 Assault Rifle?
Thank you Mr. Interested.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
The question is not easily answered, so here is a general rule that usually applies.
Check your state game and fish department for hunting regulations and restrictions on types of firearms and for what type of game.
Saying that, some states allow the use of an assault rifle such as the AR-15 or AK-47 for hunting but restrict the magazine capacity and bullet grain.
I advised getting a magazine called the AR-Stoner, AR-15 Hunting Magazine, capacity 5-Rounds per Mag. I bought two from USAMidway online, see above.
The advantage of these magazines allows for three possible uses:
1) For Hunting were 3 or 5 rounds maximum are permitted.
2) They are excellent for holding and firing 5.56 Blank Rounds, I have used them for blanks.
3) Often times in Competition Shooting 3 or 5 rounds are all that's allowed per magazine shoot.
Also, the 5-round magazine reduces both bulk and weight when carrying around your rifle for hunting.
Hunting with an AR-15 may be regulated to 55 Grain, FMJ, 223 Remington Rounds. Also, I don't know of or have ever heard of any state or territory that would allow ammo such as Tracers, so restrictions on types of ammo as well as magazine capacity is most likely. Once again, get the regulations first before obtaining a Hunting License and possible Stamp for certain game and hunting areas (game preserves, national parks, government or Indian lands). Once you know you can Hunt with your Assault Rifle, then proceed in getting the Hunting License and any additional stamp for the type of game you are hunting. Most of the people I have talked to that hunt with their AR-15 purchase 223 Remington UMC MC (Soft Point Ammo), 50-rounds per box (see picture below), especially when they are hunting for deer.

Firearm Forum Question: Firing Blanks from Your Assault Rifle

Ask A Firearms Question:
Can I fire blank rounds through a typical U.S. or Soviet made Assault rifle?
Thank you Buckeye Football Fan.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Yes you can fire blanks from most civilian made assault rifles including the AR-15 and AK-47.
If you do not want to load the blanks one at a time, you will need a special device for firing blanks. This device is the same as the U.S. Military uses, see photo below. The device allows blanks to be fired rapidly and ejects the spent round without jamming. It fits over the end of assault rifle. I bought my blank adapter along with 500 rounds of 5.56 ammo blanks from United Nations Ammo in Phoenix, Arizona.

Firearm Forum Question: Using Steel Case or Lead Bullet Ammo

Ask A Firearms Question:
I have heard that you should not shoot steel case ammo through a modern 223/556 U.S. made assault rifle, like my Colt AR15, is this true?

Thank you Sammy da Shooter.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Steel case ammo is primarily a Russian or former Soviet Bloc country manufactured ammunition. TulAmmo is commonly found and sold here in the USA, and is Russian made, and imported. This ammo cost less than more popular brands and is sold by Wal-Mart in 20-round boxes of 223 Caliber, 55 Grain, FMJ, Steel Case, Burden Primed. It is also widely sold by bulk ammo suppliers in 1,000 round packs (boxes). Wal-Mart also sells 7.62x39, shown above.
The real negative about this ammo is that it's 'Burden Primed.' Burden Primed ammo cannot be reloaded, which makes it a no buy for many shooters who reload their own ammo.
As for the steel case, most of this is now coated.
Russian made firearms have been shooting steel case ammo since WWII.
TuAmmo makes for good plinking ammo (target shooting). Just simply take a wire brush on your cleaning rod and spray it with some WD-40, run it through the barrel down to the bore, then wipe it with a clean dry patch a few times. Finally take a cleaning patch with some light oil and run it through barrel.
I shoot this all the time, but I do not reload and I always immediately clean the bore after shooting.
For those that may think this is not true then evaluate this FACT – Most shooters have owned a 22 Caliber Rifle or Handgun during their lifetime. Even high quality ammo such as Winchester 22 Caliber has lead bullets. I have owned many 22 caliber rifles and handguns that I used both copper and lead in 22 LR (Long Rifle Ammo), and have been doing so for 50 years, and without any problems. I still shoot both in my Ruger 10/22 Rifle.

Firearm Forum Question: What is a Squib Round

Ask A Firearms Question:
What exactly is a Squib Round and what causes this to happen?
Thank you George Mulroon.

Here are some samples of squib rounds and firearm damage as a result of second round being discharged while the squib is still in the barrel:

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
A Squib Round occurs when there is not sufficient energy to expel the bullet completely through the barrel. This can be caused by several things including bad powder, insufficient powder, worn out casing, bullet not properly seated into casing, wrong bullet size, an old primer, or corrosive ammo.
This has a tendency to occur in reloads, that is why I do not buy reloads from anyone I don't know. Older bullets may cause this. You should inspect your ammo before usage, and any signs that it has rust, corrosion, or is tarnished dispose of it properly and don't fire it. Yes, you can get a squib round from a new factory load. This is more likely to occur in ammo made outside the USA.
If you shoot another round when there is a bullet stuck in your barrel the results could be quite ugly. The first bullet could simply be pushed out the end of the barrel with the second round with no damage; The barrel could be damaged due to over pressures of a second round attempting to push the first round out the barrel, generally you end up with a bulged barrel; Finally it could go boom and parts fly off and cause you injury.
So if it is a squib round clear the barrel immediately, the best method is a wooden dow rod the size of the barrel diameter, Home Depot probably can help out. This is why I always carry a dow rod with me when I shoot. The wooden down rod can also be used to clear a stuck round in the chamber caused by jamming.
Do not use a metal rod.
If there appears to be any damage stop shooting and consult an expert, i.e. a Gunsmith and have the weapon thoroughly checked and tested.
Unfortunate accidents involving a squib round usually occur is semi or full auto fire weapons. They can occur in revolvers as well. Accidents are often caused by not paying attention to the use of the weapon.
In modern weapons such as an AR15 most likely the damage will be to the breach or bolt carrier, this places the accident and damage to the firearm closer to your face, head, and hands.
I always wear gloves and safety google when I shoot, I recommend you do the same.

Firearm Forum Question: What Should I Look for in a Complete Lower Assault Rifle Assembly

Ask A Firearms Question:
In a previous post a question was asked 'What's in a complete Upper AR15 Assembly", I would like to know What's in a complete 'Lower Assembly'?
Thank you Fuzzy Stash.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
When buying a Lower for any assault rifle regardless of the caliber, make sure it's complete and fully assembled. The Upper should be able to be installed on any standard mil spec complete lower receiver and be ready to fire.
A Complete Lower Assembly should include the following: Complete Lower Parts Kit, Pistol Grip, Buffer Tube, Buffer, Buffer Spring, 6-Position M4 Style Stock, and Accepts all Standard Mil Spec Uppers.

Notes:
1) You may want to look for a lower that can accommodate both right and left handed shooters if you plan to sell this firearm anytime in the near future.
2) The picture shows a lower assembly with 6-position adjustable stock. These also come with a fixed stock as on the original M-16 Style or a Folding Stock.
3) This post plus the previous post on December 11, 2013 showing the Upper gets one ready for a complete assault rifle, less the Magazines.
4) If you are purchasing an Assault Rifle in components as opposed to a complete rifle from an FFL dealer, you will have to buy a Magazine.

Firearm Forum Question: Field Dressing a Deer

Ask A Firearms Question:
Got my first deer this year, but had a lot of issues with field dressing the deer properly, is there a good video that explains How to Field Dress a Deer?
Thank you Carl Mudder.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
In searching Youtube I like the following instructional video the best.
Pay attention to the field dressing because the meat can become spoiled or contaminated if done improperly. The colder the weather the better for preserving the meat.
Personally I never tried to skin or carve the meat. I suggest before you go hunting find a butcher that will skin and butcher the meat including packaging for freezing. Also deer are quite heavy even after field dressing, so hunt with a buddy and be prepared to haul the carcass a fair distance to your vehicle. Always make sure you have 2 sharp knives, and wear surgical gloves. Remove any items on your wrist such as a watch or compass before starting the field dressing.

Important: Never shoot anything you are not going to eat. You can always donate the meat to a homeless shelter.

Reminder: Remember to sight in your rifle before going hunting. Also, it is advisable to carry a handgun.

WARNING: The following video is graphic you may not want young children viewing this video.

Firearm Forum Question: What Should I Look for in an Upper Assault Rifle Assembly

Ask A Firearms Question:
Just getting started in this Assault Rifle thing. Have little experience at buying this type of weapon. No prior military experience. So, what should I look for in buying an Upper for an assault rifle?
Thank you Just Passing Threw Life.

Shown is a complete upper assemble for a 223/556 assault rifle.
This is my DPMS A4 Carbine 223 / 5.56 Upper Assembly.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
When buying an upper for any assault rifle regardless of the caliber, make sure it's complete and fully assembled. Should be able to be installed on any standard mil spec lower receiver.
This should include the following:
Barrel, A3 Picatinny Rail, 1/2"-28 Thread for Muzzle, A2 Flash Hider (make sure the flash hider is removable and not pinned), Hand Guard, Fixed Front Sight with Bayonet Lug, Fixed Rear Sight, Carbine-Length Gas System, Complete Bolt Carrier Group, Charging Handle, Forward Assist, Shell Deflector, Ejection Port Door, and 2-Piece Glacierguard Handguards.
Important Note - Anything not listed above would have to be purchased separately. I found it to be cost affective to buy the complete assembly all ready assembled. In other words, you should be able to drop the complete upper into any lower configuration assemble and fire it.

Firearm Forum Question: Any Thoughts on Buying a 308 NATO Assault Rifle

Ask A Firearms Question:
I have two assault rifles now; a 223/556 Colt and a Cz 7.62x39.
Any thoughts out there on adding a 308 NATO/ 308 Winchester Assault Rifle?
Thank you Juicy Rider.

Answer:
Blog Administrator -
Personally I do not own a 308, either in assault or hunting rifle, nor do I plan on purchasing one in the near future. My primary objection to owning a 308 style assault rifle is the cost of ammo.
Choose wisely grasshopper.

Here are some photos I found of the typical 308 NATO Assault Rifle. These are from the 2013 online catalogs from various manufacturers:

308 NATO, 308 Win Complete Upper Assembly,
Cost = Varies depending on supplier/manufacturer

Firearm Forum Question: Reloading Your Own Ammo, Getting Started with a Dillon Press

Ask A Firearms Question:
I am thinking of getting into Reloading my own Ammo. Any suggestions would be helpful?

I do not reload myself. Something that I regret. The cost of ammo is now so damn expensive if you shoot a lot you need to reload.
The problem in reloading is getting started. The cost of a basic multi Dillion Precession Press with one handgun dye (caliber), incidental components and accessories, plus 1,000 primers, bullets, brass cases, and powder will set you back over $1,100.00. I just priced the basic multi-purpose model RL 550B. This will do almost all pistol calibers and most common rifle calibers. If you want to reload shotgun shells that's a separate press. I have talked to a lot of shooters, many of them Cowboy SASS Members, they all recommend Dillion Precision Presses as the choice. Dillion offers a no hassle life time warranty and replacement. Another cost to consider would be a work bench and some basic tools. I just bought a wooden heavy duty work bench and it cost me about $200.00. Also don't do this is your house. You will need a garage or at least a shed to do your work. In addition, consider where are you going to store the ammo, powder, ah a Gun Safe may be needed and that's another $1,500.00 for good quality safe.
