What Does it Mean When a Gun Discharges Out of Battery?

This is when a Firearm discharges (fires) when the slide or bolt is not fully closed. This can result in the firearm exploding sending shrapnel flying everywhere injuring or killing the user (shooter), and any bystanders to close.
